PDF MP3 173.92 MBBeyond Functional Harmony presents a system that creates melody and harmony, and allows them to function outside of the normal dependencies governing the principles of diatonic harmony, melody, and form. This system should give the composer a departure point from the harmonic and melodic characteristics grounded in the principles of tonal, key related, or functional harmony. This text should be undertaken in the same spirit in which it was written---an excitement of discovery, an enthusiasm for new ideas, and an ongoing pursuit for personal growth and development.

It seems really interesting, since I read the editor review and a little article at Berklee: But anyways. I would like somebody who read it to give me an opinion aboit it. Thanks!!!I haven't read the book, but the article/lesson is very good. However, he still seems to stay relatively close to functional harmony as I understand it. He's still talking about harmonising a melody with chords of the kind we're familiar with - at least in jazz.

And he's talking about 'tension' and 'resolution', which still have functional connotations. The only divergence is he's encouraging the use non-diatonic chords, and non-functional changes (some of the time anyway). Ordinary functional harmony is not always diatonic, but it does assign meaning (a role in a sequence) to any chord it uses. In true non-functional harmony, the only role for a chord is to (a) harmonise the melody at that point, and (b) sound nice in its own right (consonant or dissonant according to taste, not to its function in a sequence).

You can hear non-functional harmony in modal jazz going back to Miles Davis's album 'Kind of Blue' (1959), and even his earlier track 'Milestones'. (Most tracks on Kind of Blue mix functional with non-functional.) I'd say Naus's book looks very interesting, but you need to make sure you are really aware of how chords work functionally, so that you can avoid that sound or role when doing the exercise. (The trick used in modal jazz is to use non-tertian chords, like 7sus4s and 11s, which have no familiar function.) IOW, we are really used to hearing chords in functional roles. To go 'beyond' functional harmony, we need to tackle that habit and break it down. I don't think he's sufficienty clear on that in the article (strategies for avoiding the familiar), but I guess he explores the issue in more depth in the book.
